Star anise, latin name Illicium Verum Hook. F. , a plant of star anise genera . The dry fruit can be used as cooking seasoning in China and southeast Asia . Instead of normal use to flavor ingredients, it has also been widely used for the treatment of indigestion, stomach ache, colic in babies, and even facial paralysis.
The active ingredient of star anise is shikimic acid. Now, Shikimic Acid serves as the starting material for Oseltamivir which is a neuraminidase inhibitor used in the treatment and prophylaxis of both influenza A and influenza B.
