Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a glycoprotein secreted by the trophoblasts of the placenta. It is composed of α and β dimer glycoproteins. The α subunit of the glycoprotein hormone with molecular weight of 36700 is basically similar to FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone) and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) secreted by the pituitary gland, so it can cross-react with each other, while the structure of the β subunit is different. The fertilized eggs of mature women move to the uterine cavity for implantation and form an embryo. During the development and growth of the fetus, the placental syncytiotrophoblast cells produce a large amount of HCG, which can be excreted into the urine through the pregnant woman's blood circulation. HCG levels in serum and urine increase rapidly between 1 and 2.5 weeks of gestation, peak at 8 weeks of gestation, decrease to moderate levels at 4 months of gestation, and maintain until the end of gestation. At present, the commonly used detection methods are: latex aggregation inhibition test and hemagglutination inhibition test; Radioimmunoassay (RIA); Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); Colloidal gold assay for monoclonal antibody.
